Chips Ahoy! – Dance

This project is one of my favourites from the past couple years. Getting Chips Ahoy’s mascot Chip to break out the dance moves was a tonne of fun, and the whole process was an absolute blast.

My role on this project was Animation Director.

While 3D is not my original area of expertise, 3D projects are one of my favourite types of projects to direct. In fact, counterintuitive though it may seem, I consider my greatest asset as a director of 3D projects to be my background in the world of 2D character animation.

I insist in my 3D projects on a traditional pre-production process, including crucially an old school, detailed, hand-drawn animatic. While talented animators – like the ones I was blessed to have on my team for this campaign – are able to get a lot of interesting poses and expressions out of a rig, I find nothing quite compares to the freedom that comes from working out a sequence “the old fashioned way”, on pencil and paper. The snappiness and dynamism we were able to get out of this character stands testament to this approach.
